BEACH SPORTS DAY AT CABRILLO BEACH
- What is Beach Sports Day at Cabrillo Beach?
Beach Sports Day is a free aquatics and beach sports event hosted by the Cabrillo Beach Bathhouse (LA Department of Recreation and Parks) at Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro on Saturday June 3rd 2006 between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm.
- What kind of activities can guests expect to see or be involved in?
The event is designed to allow kids and adults to sample the large number of water sports and beach activities that can be enjoyed at Cabrillo Beach. This year, we are offering free lessons in kayaking, windsurfing, paddle boarding, scuba diving, a chance to board and paddle on a dragon boat and to play some volleyball. At noon, participants can enjoy refreshments and a barbecue at a very reasonable cost while our live band, San Pedro-based Trick Banana plays throughout the afternoon. Meanwhile, a number of organizations will have exhibits to communicate information about their programs and local activities, including the Los Angeles City and County lifeguards, the LAPD, the LA Fire Department, the Port of Los Angeles and many more.
All this is made possible with the generous support of local organizations and businesses who volunteer their resources and equipment.
- Who is invited to attend or participate and how do they get involved?
This event is open to anyone with an interest in beach and water sports. With the supervision of the Los Angeles City Lifeguards, we provide a safe and fun environment. There will be a sign up booth outside of the Cabrillo Beach Bathhouse open at 10:00 am on June 3rd 2006 where participants will receive a wrist band that allows them to go from one activity to the other at their own pace. In the past, we've had a large number of kids and families participate as well as adults who wanted to try something new.
- When Did the Event Get Started?
This is our third annual event and we thank our numerous volunteers and sponsors on the Cabrillo Beach Bathhouse Park Advisory Board, the Cabrillo Beach Boosters, Councilwoman Janice Hahn, the Port of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles City Lifeguards for helping us make it happen. Every year we see a growing number of participants; last year we had approximately 250 participants; this year as we continue to reach out to a number of youth organizations to communicate about this event, we expect to see even more. What makes this day so special is that it is a unique way to experience water and beach sports taught by professionals, all in one day, in one spot, for free. People love the fact that they are getting a taste, for example, of scuba diving from experts at Pacific Wilderness, or windsurfing from Captain Kirk's Windsurfing, or kayaking from the City Lifeguards all on one beach. It is also great fun to see the beach come alive with music and see local organizations come together in a festive environment.
